"And you may ask yourself - Well ... how did I get here?" -David Byrne

I don't pretend to understand everything that results when I set out to make a painting. I start with images that resonate with me for one reason or another. Then I push them around in sketches and in photoshop until I tease out the right balance of contrasting meanings and visual affinity among the images. Not knowing exactly where a work is going helps keep me interested. Usually I end up nudging the images toward certain themes that I find fascinating. The paintings in this grouping all have to do with things that lie just below the surface of ordinary life - the coexistence of things both familiar and unknowable.
